Hi everyone,
We abuse our eyesight more than ever in today’s technological age – we stare at small type and images on computer screens, smartphones and televisions. This all has a cumulative effect, leading to eye fatigue as well as an increase in age-related eye problems like macular degeneration.
Today we have the luxury of successful eye surgeries like LASIK to correct bad eyesight. You can visit this website to find out more about the range of treatments offered. However, surgery isn’t enough on its own. It’s vital that you regularly exercise these three ways of improving your eye health.
Eating the right food
There are a wide variety of nutrients that your eyes require to function at their optimum:
· Lutein is found in leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale and broccoli. This is a nutrient that forms protective pigments in the macular region of your retina. Other antioxidants that protect the macula include beta-carotene and zeaxanthin.
· Vitamins A, C and E and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to your eyesight.
· Foods that are rich in sulphur, cysteine and lecithin will help protect the lens of your eye from cataract formation. These can be found in garlic, onions, shallots and capers.
· Blueberries, grapes and goji berries are chock-full of anthocyanin, an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision.
· Finally, DHA is a fatty acid that is found in cold-water fish like wild salmon, sardines, mackerel and cod. DHA gives structural support to cell membranes, which boost eye health.
Performing eye exercises regularly
You should perform the following exercises first thing in the morning and right before you go to sleep at night:
· Firstly, warm your eyes by rubbing your palms together to generate heat and placing them over your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times.
· Next, you have to roll your eyes. Look upwards and then slowly circle them clockwise ten times and then ten times counter clockwise.
· The next exercise involves your ability to focus. Hold a pen at arm’s length, focus your eyes on it and then slowly bring it closer until it is six inches away from your face. Move it backwards again to arm’s length, and repeat ten times.
· Massage your temples using your thumb knuckles, rotating them against your temples in small circles, 20 times in one direction and 20 times in the other.
Rest your eyes
Again, this is simple but very necessary. You need to rest your eyes at regular intervals. Getting adequate amounts of sleep is essential for good eye health. Sleep will allow your eyes to rest and repair themselves. Not getting enough sleep will weaken your vision. During work hours, try to rest your eyes once an hour for around ten minutes.
Your eyes are the window to the world: they are a vital part of our bodies that we routinely neglect to take care of. By eating sufficiently, exercising and resting your eyes adequately, you’ll ensure that they are in the best of health.
Thanks,
